Illness history.
In order to recognize precisely the patient's ailments, chiropractor asks him or her many questions.
The most common of them are listed below:
- How did the illness begin?
- How long do the ailments remain?
- Did the patient have similar problems earlier?
- Where, exactly does the pain occur?
- Does the pain occur in one or in many places?
- What exacerbates the pain and what soothes it?
- Does walking, sitting, standing or lying sharpens the pain?
- Which position soothes it?
- Does syptoms like numbness or tingling occur?
- Was the patient injured?
- What kind of injury was it (if any)?
- Do headaches and dizziness, problems with hearing or ringing in ears occur?
- Does the patient have problems with evacuating bowels and passing urine?
- Did the patient suffer form any diseases and undergo operations in the past?
- Is the general condition of the patient's health good?
Not all of these questions are used in every case and if the disease has sharp character and does not last for a long time, the anamnesis takes usually a couple of minutes.
Long lasting, chronic ailments require gathering a lot of information, what obviously takes much more time.

Examination.
For the examination the patient should be stripped to the underwear.
At first the therapist carries out orthopedic and neurological test of particular bones and joints. Sometimes examines reflexes as well.
The next stage is an examination by touch, due to which the therapist can estimate mobility of joints, including spinal joints. The spine is examined in all positions: bent to the front and to the sides as well as straight and rotated. The therapist tests, one after the other, every vertebra. This way also the
position of bones in relation to each other and to soft tissues (muscles, ligaments and tendons) can be controlled.
In order to confirm the diagnosis or exclude diseases which cannot be cured by manipulations, the therapist orders an x-ray of particular part of body.

Diagnosis.
On the ground of anamnesis and physical examination, and x-ray, the therapist ascertains the diagnosis and plans the treatment.

Course of treatment.
Treatment of serious cases, with strong painful ailments, as for example herniated disc, may be started already at the first visit.
In chronic cases, when complete tests may be carried out on the patient, therapeutic interventions are usually postponed till the second visit. Then the therapist discusses results of examination and possibility of manual therapy with the patient and qualifies the patient for treatment.
During the intervention the patient is usually sitting or lying on a special table. Before manipulations most of the therapists apply massage as well as other technics relaxing muscles. In exceptional cases high frequency ultrasounds are applied, in order to improve blood supply in the tissues and stamp out local inflammatory conditions by hastening elimination of toxines.
If problems concern neck, the therapist finds the affected joint and - gently pulling the head - makes a precise jerk. At this moment a popping sound may be heard (caused by liberation of a bubble of air from the articulative liquid). This is a normal symptom and should not alarm the patient.
During carrying out interventions on the thoracic part of spine, the patient lies on his front, breathing deeply. The therapist puts his hands on the ill part of spine and makes a quick, precise push during an exhalation.
If the lumbar part of spine requires treatment, then the patient lies on his front or side and the therapist makes a vigorous push on the area of the intervertebral joint affected by the disease.
. This intervention may be repeated in various portions and on both sides of the backbone.
In complicated cases, when the distempers affect more than one portion of spine, its particular portions may be treated during one session. After the intervention, the therapist examines the range of spine's movement in order to estimate its results. Usually, however, a couple of sessions are required until the patient feels improvement.
Extremely severe and chronic cases require many visits and results are achieved after a much longer period of time.
